Highline Premier FC: Team Talk

By James Conroy 04 Oct, 2023
As we delve into the Fall and Winter months in the Pacific Northwest, it's no surprise that cold temperatures and wet conditions return. For parents and players alike, it's natural to wonder: how cold is too cold for soccer, and who decides? Priority: Player Safety At Highline Premier FC, our top priority is player safety. When we make the decision to cancel practices or games, we do so with the utmost care. When conditions limit our ability to play, our goal is to notify parents and players as soon as possible. Communication channels include email notifications, PlayMetrics app alerts, or verbal communication by on-site staff at the field. Who Holds the Authority to Cancel?

It's that time of year again, the sun is out and temps are heating up. While the sun brings enthusiasm and excitement, we are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of our young athletes in the face of potential heat-related challenges. Here's how HPFC tries to blend joyous play with careful precautions to guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Vigilance in Warm Weather Play When it comes to practicing and playing under warmer temperatures, we take a proactive approach to safeguarding our players' health. Our commitment to their safety extends beyond the game, ensuring that every aspect of their experience is informed and secure. Coach Training for Recognizing Heat-Related Illness One of our key priorities is coach training in recognizing the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Coaches undergo specialized training to identify signs of heat exhaustion and Exertional Heat Stroke (EHS). By equipping our coaches with the knowledge to detect these early warning signs, we're better prepared to take rapid action through hydration and cooling measures for a swift recovery. Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses: Your Child's Safety Comes First Heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and EHS, can be severe and potentially life-threatening, particularly when physical activity is involved. Detecting symptoms at an early stage allows for timely treatment and recovery. Look out for these initial signs: Weakness or fatigue Headache Nausea and dizziness Altered mental status (confusion, irritability, aggressive behavior) Slurred speech Hallucinations Loss of balance or falling down Throbbing headache Body temperature above 104°F Complaining of chills while the skin feels warm Weather Adaptations, Hydration, and the WBGT Chart We recognize that staying hydrated is crucial when playing in warm weather. Our coaches emphasizes the importance of regular water breaks to prevent overheating and dehydration. Additionally, training schedules and activities are adjusted to ensure players remain comfortable and well. To further enhance our safety measures, we adhere to U.S. Soccer's Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) chart, which serves as a guide for adjusting activities based on temperature conditions. Below, we have provided the WBGT chart below showing how activities will be modified based on the current Wet Bulb Temperature. Most of the West Coast of the US is located in Category 1:

As the summer heat settles upon the Pacific Northwest, we at Highline Premier Football Club (HPFC) are preparing for the arrival of "Smoke Season." Our top priorities are the safety and well-being of our young soccer players and their families during this period. Read on to discover how we are taking proactive steps to ensure a safe training environment. Monitoring Air Quality in Real Time Our dedicated HPFC Director of Operations keeps a vigilant eye on various weather conditions daily. As smoke levels rise and air pollution becomes a concern, we closely monitor the situation on an hourly basis. Hourly monitoring allows us to provide coaches with the most current and accurate information, ensuring our staff can make well-informed decisions regarding training sessions. Putting Safety First with AQI Matrix To determine the impact of poor air quality on our training sessions and games, we rely on the Air Quality Index (AQI) matrix. This matrix acts as our guide, helping us assess the level of contaminants in the air and tailor our activities accordingly. We aim to balance maintaining player health and providing meaningful training experiences.

Welcome, soccer parents, to the exciting world of youth soccer tournaments! As the Summer soccer season heats up, it's vital to gear up your young athlete with the best tools for success. Beyond the shin guards and cleats, one crucial aspect can make all the difference: game-day nutrition. By ensuring your player's safety through proper refueling, rest, and hydration, you're setting them up for a triumphant performance and safeguarding their well-being on the field. Fueling for Powerful Play: Just like a sports car needs the right fuel to roar down the track, your young athlete requires the perfect blend of nutrients for top-notch performance. Think of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats as the trio that powers their play. Carbohydrates act as their energetic jet fuel, proteins rebuild their muscles like skilled engineers, and fats provide sturdy armor for their bodies. When these three powerhouses work together, you give your child the ultimate game-day advantage while keeping their safety in check. Balanced Nutrition: The Winning Lineup: Picture this: your child's plate is a soccer field, and each nutrient is a player with a specific role. Carbohydrates are the MVP forwards, delivering quick bursts of energy. Proteins are the defensive stars, repairing and strengthening their muscles. Fats are the tactical goalkeepers, protecting their bodies and ensuring overall health. A balanced team – or, in this case, a balanced meal – provides they're ready to conquer the game safely and with unwavering energy. Energize with Smart Carbs: Regarding carbs, quality matters; simple carbs, like sugary treats, are like short sprints – quick but fleeting bursts of energy. Opt for complex carbs in fruits, grains, and starchy vegetables instead. These endurance runners provide sustained energy that helps your young player maintain focus, agility, and, most importantly, safety throughout the game. Revitalize with Protein Power: Think of protein as your child's secret recovery weapon. After intense play, their muscles need repair, and protein is the superhero to do just that. Lean meats, yogurt, eggs, and even a protein-packed smoothie with a dash of spinach are the sidekicks that ensure they bounce back quickly. But beware of the villainous protein bars – some are masked with too much sugar. Watch for those with 15g or less to guarantee their safety and proper recovery. Timing is Victory: Timing is crucial – not just in soccer, but in nutrition too. Before the game, serve up a carb-rich meal about 2-3 hours prior – it's like a strategic huddle before the match. This kind of meal gives them the energy to kick off confidently and safely. During the game, hydration is the key player. Keep water and natural electrolytes like oranges or a pinch of salt in mind to prevent overheating and ensure they're always in top form. Post-Game Glory: After the final whistle, it's time for celebration, which means refueling. Within 15-20 minutes, offer a high-carb snack like dried fruit or a granola bar. These snacks replenish their energy stores and aid in muscle repair, ensuring they're ready for their next play safely and efficiently. Don't forget the victory lap – a balanced meal within an hour with fats, proteins, and carbs is the finishing touch to support their recovery and keep them injury-free. Unleash Their Full Potential: Game-day nutrition isn't just a game-changer; it's a safety strategy. Ensuring your young athlete gets the proper nutrients at the correct times fosters their endurance, strength, and overall performance. Imagine the confidence they'll feel, even during the final minutes of a match. With a well-planned nutrition playbook, you're not just cheering them on – you're actively safeguarding their safety and success as they dazzle on the soccer field. As soccer parents, you are critical to your child's safety and victory. By mastering game day nutrition, you're nurturing their passion for the sport and empowering them to shine with energy, skill, and, most importantly, safety. So, gear up, stock up on the right foods, and get ready to witness your young soccer star thrive on the field like never before!
