Tips for a healthier summer Tournament Season!

The warm weather of summer is here and is the Summer Tournament season.

While we were all safe at home last year, this year many of our Highline Premier FC teams will be travelling to tournaments again this summer.  With tournament destinations ranging from Tukwila to Portland our teams will compete against competition from all over the Pacific Northwest.  It becomes important for us to remind our families that while tournaments can be fun, it is extremely important keep an eye on your child’s health.

Playing so many games in during a confined space can wreak havoc and may lead to injuries.  With that in mind, we’ve put together some helpful tips and reminders for your summer.

Stay Hydrated

Heat + Soccer = Great combination to take energy out of our kids.  Too much of both can lead to disaster.  HPFC coaches are training in understanding and identifying some of the key symptoms for heat exhaustion.

Water, Chocolate Milk, Sports Drinks and all should be consumed so that our players can remain hydrated.

Rest and Recovery

If a team plays 4 or more games during a weekend, it may be necessary to skip practice the following week to avoid the risk of injury.  Some literature out there suggests a light workout or even just walking as part of the recovery for your young athlete.

Stretching

Stretching can has been shown to increase blood flow, reducing lactic acid build up in muscle tissues, improve flexibility all of which can result in reducing muscle fatigue and lowering the risk of injury.

Sleep

As tempting as it may be to stay out at the team pool until closing hours or stay up to get in one more game of Fortnite, sleep allows the body to recover and can help improve reaction time as well as reduce the risk of injury.

Communicate

Remember that a key to communication is listening.  If your child is saying something hurts, doesn’t feel right, or just wants to take it easy.  Listen and take it seriously.  Winning a soccer game isn’t everything.  Their continued growth as player and love of the game are important to us.

Obey COVID-19 Protocols

Remember that while more people are getting vaccinated every day and COVID-19 numbers are dramatically decreasing, we must remain vigillant that we don't get the virus.  Mask up, wash your hands, practice social distancing, and get vaccinated when it's your turn. If anyone in your household has any COVID-19 symptoms, stay home and contact us at [email protected]

Most of our HPFC teams take part in at least 3 tournaments over the course of the June through August summer tournament calendar.  That means over the course of just 3 weekends, they could play as many games as they will the entire Fall or Spring Season combined.  Remember to follow the tips above and if anything is not right physically or mentally, inform your coach.

Have fun and be safe.
