9v9 Phase (11U–12U)

The 9v9 phase builds on the foundation established in earlier stages by introducing increased tactical complexity and decision-making. As the field and player numbers expand, players are asked to recognize more game situations, connect actions across lines, and begin applying team concepts at a higher level. This phase supports the transition from individual skill development toward a clearer understanding of team play.

What We Focus On

On the Field

  • Expanding technical skill under pressure
  • Understanding spacing, width, and depth
  • Decision-making in transition moments
  • Playing both sides of the ball: attacking and defending

Players continue to be encouraged to try things, make mistakes, and learn through guided feedback.

Off the Field

  • Building consistency and accountability
  • Learning how to prepare for training and matches
  • Developing communication within a team setting
  • Understanding effort, focus, and responsibility

Curiosity and engagement still matter more than polish at this stage.

Team Formation at 9v9

Multiple teams are formed within each age group. Players are evaluated and placed based on current readiness, experience, and developmental needs.

Placement reflects where a player is starting, not where they are expected to finish. Development remains non-linear, and movement between teams over time is normal and expected.

Players may begin to explore specific positions, but versatility and learning different roles are still emphasized.

Competition at 9v9

9v9 competition provides players with opportunities to apply training concepts in more demanding game environments. Matches emphasize problem-solving, adapting to game situations, and understanding roles within the team. Coaches use competition as a tool for learning, helping players connect decisions made in training to real match experiences.

Season Rhythm

What the Season Looks Like

  • Fall and spring league play anchor the year
  • Summer includes training and tournament play
  • Planned breaks are built into the calendar
  • Participation options include year-round teams

The rhythm supports steady development without requiring constant intensity.

Multi-Sport and Balance

  • Multi-sport participation is common and supported
  • Rest helps prevent burnout and overuse injuries
  • Academic and family commitments are respected
  • Clear communication helps manage expectations

Balance supports long-term athletic and personal development.

Success in the 9v9 Phase

Success at this stage shows up in how players read the game, solve problems, and support their teammates.

We look for growth in confidence, awareness, and responsibility, along with a willingness to engage with challenges and learn from mistakes.

Success in the 9v9 phase is measured by:

  • Increased understanding of positional responsibilities
  • Improved decision-making in both attacking and defending moments
  • Growing ability to combine with teammates across lines
  • Confidence adapting to different game situations

The goal is to prepare players for the demands of the full game while maintaining a positive relationship with soccer.
