Teams at Highline Premier FC

Teams at Highline Premier FC are organized around how players learn the game, not where they finish at tryouts. Players develop at different rates, and learning looks different as the game changes from 7v7 to 9v9 to 11v11.

Our goal is to place each player in an environment that provides the appropriate challenge for their current phase of development, while keeping pathways open as they grow.

One Club

Development is not a checklist and it is not a straight line. Players grow at different rates technically, physically, and emotionally. Progress often includes mistakes, setbacks, and moments of discomfort.

We embrace that reality rather than fight it.

At Highline, development means teaching players how to understand the game, make better decisions under pressure, and take responsibility for their learning over time. It also means holding players to standards that match their stage of growth.

How Our Program Works

Team Formation and Placement

  • Multiple teams are formed within each age group
  • Players are evaluated and placed based on current readiness and development needs
  • Team placement reflects where a player is starting, not where they are expected to finish
  • Movement between teams over time is normal and expected

How Players Grow Over Time

  • Development is non-linear
  • Late starters and new entrants are common
  • Players may progress at different speeds across technical, physical, and emotional areas
  • Commitment, curiosity, and effort matter as much as starting point

Phases of Development

7v7 Phase (8U–10U)

  • Small-sided play focused on touches and decision-making
  • Emphasis on comfort with the ball and enjoyment of the game
  • Multiple entry points for players new to competitive soccer
  • Seasonal and year-round participation options available

9v9 Phase (11U–12U)

  • Transition toward the full game
  • Increased tactical awareness and team concepts
  • More consistent year-round training rhythm
  • Continued emphasis on development over short-term results

11v11 Phase (13U–18U)

  • Full-field soccer with greater tactical and positional demands
  • Ongoing technical and tactical development
  • Balance with academic, social, and high school commitments
  • Competition and travel vary by team and age

League Play

Highline Premier FC teams compete in the Washington Premier League (WPL) and the Regional Club League (RCL).

League placement is based on team readiness and development needs. Teams within the same age group may compete in different leagues, and league participation may change over time as teams and players grow.

Season Rhythm & Balance

What the Season Looks Like

  • Training and competition are spread across the calendar
  • Expectations evolve as players move through phases of play
  • Summer typically includes training and optional tournaments
  • League play generally begins in early fall
  • Planned breaks are built into the year

Year-round soccer provides structure and continuity without requiring constant intensity.

Balance, Health, & Communication

  • Multi-sport participation is common and supported
  • Rest and recovery help prevent burnout and overuse injuries
  • Academic and family commitments are respected
  • Clear communication helps manage schedules and expectations
  • Planning happens in partnership with families

Balance supports both player development and long-term enjoyment of the game.
